Is it worth fixing my laptop, or should I buy a new one?
How we decide if a laptop is worth repairing, from 20 years of fixing computers in Huntington Beach.
It's the first thing people ask us at the counter on Adams Ave, and it's a fair question. Here's how we think about it after 20 years of fixing computers in Huntington Beach.
Fixing usually makes sense when:
- The laptop is a few years old and was good when you bought it. A new battery, screen, keyboard or a faster drive can make it feel new again.
- The problem is one part. Batteries, charging ports, screens and keyboards are common, everyday repairs.
- You have files and programs set up the way you like them.
Replacing usually makes sense when:
- The repair would cost close to what the computer is worth.
- It can't run the system you need anymore (for example, older laptops that can't run Windows 11).
- Several things are failing at once.
How we help you decide: the check is free. We find the real problem, tell you in writing what it costs, and if fixing it isn't worth it, we'll say so. If you'd rather replace it, we can show you a tested used laptop.
Nothing gets fixed until you say yes.
