Can my computer run Windows 11?
Windows 10 no longer gets security updates. Here's how to check if your computer can move to Windows 11.
Check in 2 minutes
- Open Settings, then Windows Update.
- If your computer qualifies, you'll see an option to upgrade to Windows 11.
- For a full answer, search for PC Health Check on Microsoft's website, install it, and choose Check now.
- It tells you exactly which requirement your computer passes or fails.
What Windows 11 needs
- A supported 64 bit processor, usually from around 2018 or newer.
- At least 4 GB of memory (8 GB or more feels much better).
- At least 64 GB of storage.
- TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, two security features built into most newer computers. Sometimes they're just turned off and can be switched on.
If it fails the check
- Memory or storage too small: these can often be upgraded.
- TPM or Secure Boot off: these can often be turned on in the settings.
- Processor too old: the computer can't officially run Windows 11. You can keep using it with extra care, or replace it.
- Not sure which? Bring it in and we'll check it for free.
Before you upgrade
- Back up your photos and documents.
- Make sure you know your Microsoft account password.
- Plug in the charger and leave time. The upgrade can take a while.
- A slow computer on Windows 10 will be slow on Windows 11 too. A solid state drive (SSD) upgrade often fixes that.
